Austerlitz Fire House takes a big hit from Irene

The Austerlitz  Firehouse took a big hit from the storm Irene. The water smashed the doors and coursed through the truck bays. Fortunately, the fire fighters were able to rescue the trucks and relocate them to a safe location nearby. It is clear that a new firehouse is needed.
Meanwhile, yesterday during the storm, the volunteers were busy all day, and into the dark night, pumping out the cellars of the folks who live in the neighborhood along route 22. They worked hard, with good cheer, often needing the same service in their own homes. I have to admire the volunteers who sacrifice so much and their families who often are left home to cope with the sames issues that are confronted by the whole community. Hats off to the volunteers, their families, and to all the survivors. Time to clean up!

Architect meeting to take place

The committee is meeting regularly to move the project forward. A recent meeting with the architect launched the formal design process.  The secure office in the old dining hall is almost completed.  All that’s left is to hang the doors. Phil

New Building Planning Progress

The New Building Committee (NBC) has been meeting often since the land purchase. Some of the old dining hall has been converted into secure office space for the NBC. We have had the initial site engineering done - the septic system design is in progress, siting of the bldg is in progress and  a driveway cut application has been submitted to NYSDOT.
The Austerlitz Fire Company is exploring the possibility of forming a "Fire Corps." The concept was mentioned in a recent FASNY magazine article. The idea is to create a vehicle for volunteers to provide critical non-fire expertise - fund raisers, accountants, grant writers, IT specialists - sort of like a Ladies' Aux but for these other types of contributions.
Last week, the NBC met with the architect, working towards the firehouse design. which will eventually be posted on the website. (compiled from Ed's notes)

Land purchase accomplished

Late last spring, the Austerlitz Volunteer Fire Company completed the purchase of the land (formerly town land) on which to build a firehouse for the future. The deal included the ability of the Town of Austerlitz to purchase adjoining land along the Green River to serve as additional park land. Since the purchase, the fire company New Building Committee has been preparing and planning to develop  the new firehouse site. More to come! Phil
